They were treated at Franja

Although the hospital was primarily intended for treating wounded and sick partisans, it did not refuse medical help to civilians. Nearly 900 patients of different nationalities were treated in its wards, most of them in the central B Ward located in the Pasice gorge. From there, many were sent for further treatment to external wards, which normally admitted the sick and those with minor injuries. Just over 6% of the patients were women. According to the data collected so far, 83 people died in the hospital.

Grosar, Marjan Justin

A combatant of the Kosovel Brigade

Marjan Justin Grosar from Šempeter near Gorica was mobilised into the German army in March 1944, when he was seventeen. The Germans took him by surprise just days before he intended to join the partisans. He and other boys were given a choice between joining their army or being sent to forced labour in Germany. They chose the first option, planning to defect to the partisans at the first opportunity. Marjan succeeded in this five months later, becoming a combatant of the Kosovel Brigade. In early November he was wounded during an enemy offensive in Trnovo. Shrapnel from a grenade, pierced both his legs, badly injuring one of them. He was taken for treatment to the Pavla Hospital, where his leg was saved – no amputation was necessary – although slightly shortened. In Pavla, he convalesced until March 1945, when he was transferred to a newly built disability home in the Franja hospital, together with other soldiers who were no longer fit for military service. Via Vojsko they were carried to Trebuša where they were put on a bus which took them to an inn in Log, near the hospital. There, Marjan was carried blindfolded across a torrent to the gorge by a staff member, Mirko Rakušček. This was apparently an easy job, as Marjan only weighed 35 kilograms after his stay in the Pavla Hospital. In comparison, Franja seemed to him like a fairy-tale land with electricity and a fountain-well. In the home for the disabled he learned singing, playing the accordion, the guitar and typewriting. This was the first time he had seen a typewriter, an old Remington, and he became acquainted with the rudiments of the professional rehabilitation of the disabled. On 1 May, four days before the end of the war, a rally was held with recitals and singing. These activities helped in raising their morale. At times they were even given treats. “At Easter, Dr Franja brought each one a cigarette. It was a flat Drava from the former Yugoslavia with aromatic tobacco. Our comrade Pagon made his cigarette last two days. He only drew from it twice, swallowed the smoke, so that nothing came out, and then extinguished it. This is how precious it was to him. “Tobacco helped to relieve our pain and hunger,” remembers a former partisan.
