They were treated at Franja

Although the hospital was primarily intended for treating wounded and sick partisans, it did not refuse medical help to civilians. Nearly 900 patients of different nationalities were treated in its wards, most of them in the central B Ward located in the Pasice gorge. From there, many were sent for further treatment to external wards, which normally admitted the sick and those with minor injuries. Just over 6% of the patients were women. According to the data collected so far, 83 people died in the hospital.

A partisan mother

During the war, and especially during enemy attacks in the Cerkno area, several pregnant women and mothers with newborns sought refuge at the hospital. One of them was Mira Mihelin – Nataša, who gave birth to a daughter and remained with her in the hospital until the end of the war, performing various auxiliary jobs. The life of partisan mothers in the hospital was anything but easy, as they were not considered suitable for a military institution by the staff.

Among the partisan couples whose babies were born during the war were Zdenka and Niko Kavčič. Zdenka shared this experience on the opening day of the renovated Franja in May 2010. Zdenka Zika (partisan name “Daša”) moved to Slovenia from Czechoslovakia with her parents at the end of the 1920s. Her father, Josip Zika, a master weaver, found work in Gorenjska. Together with her sister and two friends Zdenka joined the partisans to avoid being arrested by the Gestapo. This had closely monitored the girls since they had brought flowers to the grave of a fallen partisan. Zdenka met Niko Kavčič in Davča, where the intelligence service headquarters for Gorenjska was located. They got married in September 1944, but spent most of the wartime separated, writing to each other. After the German attack on Železniki, a heavily pregnant Zdenka and her comrades made their way towards Črni vrh above Cerkno. Somewhere under Blegoš she went into labour. Helped by her fellow combatants she reached a farm in Gorenji Novaki, which was owned by France Mezek. At seven o’clock in the evening she delivered baby daughter Daša. The next day, 23 March 1945, they were both taken to the Franja Hospital. Soon afterwards, all patients, including mothers with infants, had to spend several days in bunkers due to an enemy attack. After 16 days, Zdenka realised that she and her daughter had to leave the gorge if they were to survive. The discharge note signed by Dr Franja Bojc on April 8, 1945, read: “The young mother is leaving the hospital to private care at her own request.” She had allegedly warned Zdenka that her daughter would die without milk. She carried her in a rucksack past burned houses until they safely reached Zali Log. Their first shelter was the house where she and Niko had married a few months earlier. As soon as they settled, her husband entered the house. None of them expected this encounter. However, they soon had to part again and were only reunited after the liberation. When Zdenka’s father was finally able to embrace his daughter and granddaughter he said in tears: “Two left and two returned!” He was referring to Zdenka’s sister, also a partisan, who had died on 27 January 1944, during the attack on the party school in Cerkno.
