They were treated at Franja

Although the hospital was primarily intended for treating wounded and sick partisans, it did not refuse medical help to civilians. Nearly 900 patients of different nationalities were treated in its wards, most of them in the central B Ward located in the Pasice gorge. From there, many were sent for further treatment to external wards, which normally admitted the sick and those with minor injuries. Just over 6% of the patients were women. According to the data collected so far, 83 people died in the hospital.

Likar, Franc – Rafael

A combatant of the Gradnik Brigade

In July 1942, Franc Likar from Kanomlja above Idrija was summoned to begin his military service in the Italian army. On a train to Udine, an unknown man invited him to join the partisans instead, which he did and became a combatant of the Gradnik Brigade. At the end of 1943 he was sent to a course at the communist party school. The school, which had to move several times, eventually came to Cerkno where it was struck by a tragedy on 27 January 1944. An attack by the German mountain battalion (Heine) took 48 lives. Franc was incredibly lucky and his survival story is nothing short of miraculous. During the course, Franc resided at the Pri Jušku inn in Cerkno. On the day of the attack he spotted enemy soldiers through the window and wanted to escape towards Novaki. However, since the road to this village had already been controlled by the Germans, he had no choice but to rush towards Brce, a steep slope rising above the road to Novaki. On the way he came across Milojka Štrukelj, a fellow course attendee, who was wounded. Before he could help her, he was himself shot in both hands by enemy gunfire. He fell on the ground and lay low. As the German soldiers approached to finish off the wounded partisans he held back his breath pretending to be dead. Distracted by a partisan mortar on a nearby hill, they hurriedly shot him four times from a short distance and went away. Dr Franja Bojc admiringly wrote about him in her memories: “What a nerve this nineteen-year-old had to have to remain motionless after hearing military boots approaching, weapons cocking and pistols firing, and to bear the pain caused by the bullets penetrating his body.” Following the withdrawal of the German battalion from Cerkno, the badly wounded Franc crawled to a nearby haystack. There he was found by locals who had followed his bloody trail on the snow. The next day, he and his twelve comrades were admitted to the Franja Hospital. Fortunately, he completely recovered from his wounds and after a few months he left hospital. Because of his courage he was admired by other patients and the hospital staff.
