They were treated at Franja

Although the hospital was primarily intended for treating wounded and sick partisans, it did not refuse medical help to civilians. Nearly 900 patients of different nationalities were treated in its wards, most of them in the central B Ward located in the Pasice gorge. From there, many were sent for further treatment to external wards, which normally admitted the sick and those with minor injuries. Just over 6% of the patients were women. According to the data collected so far, 83 people died in the hospital.

Rappel, Vili

Partisan courier

Vili Rappl was from Gabrovka near Litija. He was born into a peasant family, as the youngest of eight children; he was his mother’s favourite. As a tall and courageous youth he followed the example of his older brothers and joined the partisans before he was even fifteen. He rode a white horse and was allegedly fond of challenging German patrols. He was wounded after an accidental mine explosion in Gorenja Trebuša. A day after, on 10 January 1944, he was admitted to the Franja Hospital where he died during an operation due to internal bleeding. He was operated on by the surgeon Dr Franci Derganc from the surgical team of the Ninth Corps, who worked at the Pavla and Franja hospitals, when his team did not participate in combat operations on the field.

Vili was buried at the hospital cemetery, together with a phial containing a sheet with his personal details. There he rested until 2012, when his grave was by chance discovered. Vili was one of more than fifty people buried at the hospital cemetery. After the war, most of the bodies were taken by their relatives; the remainder were buried in a common grave at the cemetery in Cerkno. Although Vili’s grave was probably not found on that occasion, he has not been forgotten; his name, together with others who had been buried at the former Franja’s cemetery, is engraved on the memorial plaque which was uncovered on 3 November 1946. Afterwards, his remains were transferred to the common grave at the Cerkno cemetery.

Vili’s story is a story of a young man who dreamed about freedom. He joined thousands of others who left their warm homes to fight for freedom which they deemed the highest of all values worth dying for.
